Underlying all of Ed Oates' work is a reliance on spiritual intuition. His temples beacon to an old, but familiar feeling, a basic knowledge of ones beginnings. They speak gently about spirituality rather than of religion. Drawing from many religious sources, myths, and belief systems, he provokes a unique response from every viewer, reminding them of their ancient past alive in the present. With the technique of assemblage, he weaves a spell of intrigue into structures that look as though they were not made, but have always been.

This mystery raises questions in the viewer concerning his relationship to the pieces and his creator. Using glass blowing, casting, bronze and silver, stone and wood carving, painting (oil and acrylic) gold leafing, ceramics, found objects (both natural and man made) and other techniques, Oates creates small scale pieces which are mystically monumental in scope.
